About the Dance Program
Head of the Department: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ece Merve YÜCEER NISHIDA
Mission
To train qualified dancers, performers, choreographers, and instructors in line with the principles of contemporary dance.
Objective
The educational philosophy of the Department of Dance at Yıldız Technical University’s Faculty of Art and Design is geared toward training students to become competent dancers, performers, choreographers, and dance instructors. Courses aim to help students master the art of dance and carry out original individual projects in this field. Additionally, by utilizing music, video, interdisciplinary arts, and new media tools and formats, the program helps students develop an interdisciplinary perspective and gain knowledge about theoretical studies relevant to their field.
The curriculum is primarily structured around practical application, with the goal of helping students develop a strong physical discipline and establish their own individual artistic styles.
- In technical classes, students acquire the skills to translate the fundamental elements of contemporary dance techniques into their bodies, establish the body’s relationship with space and time, use energy in different ways, and explore and develop the body’s movement capabilities.
- In classes that reinforce physical and mental creativity, students learn forms of anatomical and somatic perception, develop their physical awareness regarding external-internal experiences, and to express their individual movement abilities by integrating these with the skills acquired in technical classes, thereby developing their unique practices and styles.
- In theoretical courses, students are introduced to various theoretical studies directly or indirectly related to the art of contemporary dance. They are also guided to explore the relationships between theory and practice and to engage with theoretical analyses of artistic performances.
